TOHO & KADOKAWA TEAMING ON "GREAT YOKAI WAR" SEQUEL! Fifteen years after Miike Takashi's super-charged adventure featuring Japan's things-that-go-bump-in-the-night, comes the announcement that the acclaimed director has returned with a follow-up presented by Toho and Kadokawa Pictures for release in 2021: THE GREAT YOKAI WARS: GUARDIANS! This time, featuring a gigantic, city-smashing yokai (yes, Virginia, there are kaiju-sized yokai).
Now in production, the first image from the film was released today featuring child actor Terada Kokoro, who plays the main character, Watanabe Kei, a boy who is guided by fate to a challenge for the very survival of the world. Miike is directing from a screenplay by Watanabe Yusuke (20th Century Boys) with Kadokawa Tsuguhiko and Aramata Hiroshi, who both were involved with the 2005 film, serving as Chief Executive Producers.
Ancient fossils resting in Fossa Magna have gathered together and transformed into a colossal yokai. The colossus' destination is Tokyo. As Japan's Yokai sense the danger, humans merely perceive it to be a natural disaster. Only an elementary student, who is the blood heir of a legendary monster hunter can stop it. Suddenly, all the Yokai make themselves known to the young boy and take him on a great and fearsome adventure...
This epic production will feature all the yokai domestic audiences are familiar with, as well as new, original yokai, and monsters from around the world (expect cameos from Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster), and will make full use of creative powerful scenes taking advantage of large scale sets and cutting-edge CGI, mixed with on-set practical effects and make-up.
